Azure Extended Zones (Preview)
Azure Extended zones present an optimal solution for strategically placing virtual machines (VMs), Kubernetes clusters, and Azure storage infrastructure near users. Azure Extended Zones allow users to select and configure these services within a specified intended zone that is geographically closer than Azure's primary data centers. The initial intended zone has been established in Los Angeles, granting the ability to physically locate compute, container, and storage resources within this geographic region. And I expect, over time, we will see more of these extended zones popping up globally.
These Azure extended zones present a substantial advantage for workloads sensitive to latency. Positioning infrastructure in proximity to targeted users can yield significant benefits. They introduce novel opportunities within the realm of architecture, allowing for utilizing these extended zones to address challenges related to latency, jurisdictional boundaries, and regulatory constraints.
